Building a Legacy: Smith Surfboards
Zach Smith may be a newcomer to the world of surf shaping, but his passion and dedication are undeniable. With a deep respect for the craft and those who came before him, Zach is quickly making a name for himself in the Wilmington, NC surf scene. His journey into shaping began when he moved to the area and dreamed of making boards. That dream came to life when he met a shaper looking for a new shaping bay, which led to transforming an old bomb shelter into a workspace.
Zach’s shaping bay is a testament to his unique vision. Located in an underground bunker with a striking asymmetrical triangle entrance, the space feels like a portal to another era. Inside, Zach blends traditional techniques with modern innovation, creating boards that are both functional and beautiful. The first boards were glassed in the garage, sanded back in the shaping bay, and now, they’re full steam ahead.
“I want them to feel connected to the ocean. That’s the ultimate goal—the board is the vehicle that taps them into the ocean and taps them into whatever they want to get out of it, whether it’s an escape, a connection to nature, or figuring out who they want to be.” - Zach Smith
During our Spring Campaign, we had the opportunity to spend a morning with Zach, exploring the waterways around Masonboro Island on his boat, Beluga, which shares the same font as Smith Surfboards. Despite the lack of waves, it was a memorable experience. The chilly air and calm waters provided a serene backdrop as we discussed Zach's inspirations and aspirations for Smith Surfboards.
For Zach, shaping surfboards isn’t just about the craft—it’s about the connection he helps foster between surfers and the ocean. “Surfing is such a special thing to me, and to know that other surfers love surfing as much as I do and I get to be what connects them to surfing is probably the most rewarding, life-giving experience I’ve ever had. I will never stop doing it because that is the most special part about shaping.”
